Brunello Montalcino wine tasting in Tuscany

A Brunello di Montalcino wine tasting in Tuscany

Situated in the magnificent Tuscan countryside, lies the small hill top town of Montalcino. Known as a medieval settlement, this town has in fact been inhabited since Etruscan times, and its slopes are covered with olive orchards and productive vines. These vines are accredited with producing one of the most famous Italian wines, namely the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.

This well-known Montalcino wine is bright garnet in colour and has an intense perfume. This is one wine that truly does get better with age and can be kept for around 30 years or more, constantly improving as it matures. Internationally recognised, this red wine has been produced in the area since the 14th century, and the Sangiovese grape variety from which it is made simply thrives in the pleasant, dry climate. The name Brunello comes from an expression in the local dialect, which roughly translates as ‘nice dark one’, and is a great accompaniment to red meat, game and the tasty, locally produced pecorino cheese.

Each year, new Montalcino wines are produced, and to celebrate this occasion, the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino organises the ‘Benvenuto Brunello’ festival. During the festival, which takes place every February, the new wines which have come onto the market are presented to the press and wine experts, before being given ratings, and the new vintage is announced. To commemorate the new vintage, a ceramic tile is placed on the walls of the Palazzo Publico of Montalcino. But this is by no means an ordinary tile. Since the introduction of these commemorative tiles in 1992, every year various artists, designers and other celebrities have created a special design on the 30x30cm tiles.

Famous designers such as Prada and Salvatore Ferragamo have made their mark (in 2001 and 2011 respectively) and the 2012 tile was designed by the Italian brand Cruciani. Designed in a variety of styles with lashings of colour, together these tiles create an attractive ‘Brunello Calendar’ on the walls of the town hall.
