At the Santa Croce Basilica Entrance
The Santa Croce Basilica is an iconic masterpiece of Gothic architecture, its façade adorned with stunning polychrome marble. This historic church, once located outside the city walls, became a serene sanctuary where Franciscan friars meditated and began their renowned leather-working tradition. Inside, we will marvel at breathtaking frescoes by Giotto and Agnolo Gaddi, Donatello’s masterpieces "Crucifix" and "Annunciation," and the celebrated tombs of legendary figures such as Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli.
We'll step into the refined "Brunelleschi Cloister," with its stone-carved columns, before wandering into the 14th-century "Ancient Cloister." At its end lies the exquisite "Pazzi Chapel," a testament to Renaissance perfection, designed by Brunelleschi himself.
After exploring the Basilica and its cloisters, you'll have the chance to visit a workshop with a legacy dating back to the 13th century, where Franciscan monks pioneered leather craftsmanship along the banks of the Arno River. Here, the abundant water supply was key to their leather processing, a tradition that has been meticulously preserved for centuries. In these enchanting workshops at the School of Leather (open weekdays), master artisans continue to create authentic Florentine leather goods, combining history, artistry, and exceptional craftsmanship.
This extraordinary Renaissance gem next to the Basilica is a must-visit, where you can experience the unique blend of tradition, culture, and top-tier Florentine craftsmanship.
