Your itinerary begins in Piazza del Campidoglio, one of Rome’s most scenic locations.
Designed by Michelangelo and a symbol of the Renaissance, this square offers a perfect introduction to the sacred hill, home to Rome’s civic institutions and the famous Capitoline Museums. From here, we’ll descend toward the Via dei Fori Imperiali.
As we stroll along this historic route, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Roman Forum, the vibrant heart of ancient Rome, stretching out at the foot of the Capitoline Hill. Highlights include the remains of the Temple of Saturn, once the repository of the state treasury, and the Basilica Julia, a hub for legal and administrative affairs.
Your guide will also delve into the significance of the Curia, the Senate's meeting hall, and the stories surrounding the imposing Arch of Septimius Severus, a monumental symbol of victory and imperial power.
Continuing along the road, we’ll reach the Forum of Trajan, home to the exquisite Trajan’s Column, which narrates the emperor’s military campaigns through intricately carved reliefs. Just a short distance ahead, the Markets of Trajan stand as a remarkable testament to the commercial ingenuity of ancient Rome. These markets, considered precursors to modern shopping centers, were more than a simple marketplace. They served as the economic hub of the city, housing administrative offices, shops, and storage facilities, all ingeniously designed into the terraced slopes of the Quirinal Hill.
A brief detour will take you to the picturesque Monti district, which in ancient times was the heart of the Suburra. It was the unhealthy and overcrowded “red-light” neighborhood, located just beyond the Fora where sub-proletarians and small traders lived. It was home to lupanari (ancient brothels) and notorious taverns, frequented by criminals, but also by aristocrats and matrons seeking forbidden thrills, and home to illustrious figures such as Julius Caesar and the poet Martial. The walk culminates at the awe-inspiring Colosseum, the ultimate symbol of Rome. Here, your guide will recount tales of gladiatorial battles, imperial festivities, and the grand spectacles that once captivated thousands. Even today, this iconic amphitheater enchants visitors from around the globe. This experience is perfect for those who wish to explore Rome at a leisurely pace, savoring every detail of an itinerary that spans more than two thousand years of history.
